Eligibility Requirements

Medical Requirements

1

Permanent Disability

You must have a medical condition that permanently prevents you from performing the essential duties of your current position.

2

Medical Documentation

Comprehensive medical evidence from licensed physicians documenting the nature and extent of your disability is required.

3

Unable to Perform Duties

The disability must prevent you from performing the material and substantial duties of your regular employment with ASG.

Service Requirements

While there is no specific minimum service requirement for disability retirement, you must be an active member of ASGERF at the time the disability occurs. The Board of Trustees reviews each case individually to determine eligibility.

Application Process

1

Initial Application

Submit a disability retirement application with ASGERF as soon as possible after the disability occurs.

Important: Apply promptly as there may be time limits for filing disability claims.

2

Medical Documentation

Provide comprehensive medical records and physician statements documenting your disability.

  • • Medical history and diagnosis
  • • Treatment records and progress notes
  • • Physician's assessment of work capacity
  • • Prognosis and expected duration of disability
3

Independent Medical Examination

ASGERF may require an independent medical examination by a physician chosen by the fund to verify the extent of your disability.

4

Board Review

The ASGERF Board of Trustees reviews your application, medical evidence, and makes a determination regarding your eligibility for disability benefits.

5

Benefit Determination

If approved, your disability retirement benefits will be calculated and monthly payments will begin.

Disability Benefit Calculation

How Benefits Are Calculated

Disability retirement benefits are calculated using the same formula as normal retirement benefits, based on your years of service at the time of disability and your highest average salary.

Disability Benefit Formula

Highest 3-Year Average Salary × 2% × Years of Service at Disability

Minimum annual benefit: $600

Key Considerations

  • No early retirement penalty
  • Based on service at time of disability
  • Same payment options as normal retirement

Example Calculation

Highest 3-year average: $50,000
Years of service: 15 years

Annual benefit: $15,000
Monthly benefit: $1,250

Important Information

Periodic Reviews

Disability benefits may be subject to periodic medical reviews to ensure the disability continues to prevent you from performing your job duties. You may be required to undergo additional medical examinations.

Return to Work

If your medical condition improves and you are able to return to work, your disability benefits will cease. ASGERF must be notified immediately if your work capacity changes.
